This is a super clean domestic '70s Columbia Red Label pressing with AMAZING sound. I have done extensive shootouts for this all-time classic many times and you might be surprised how well the best of these later copies can perform against the earlier pressings. This one is a knockout and I think that almost anyone would agree. The sound is super clean, clear, and dynamic with phenomenal bass sound, which is of course crucial to any Mingus album. You might give up a touch of the tubey warmth that you'd get on an original, but the overall presentation is so on point that I really don't think you'll miss it. And the vinyl plays pretty dang quiet, good luck finding an early copy that comes anywhere close in that regard.
5 stars Allmusic: "It simply isn't possible to single out one Mingus album as definitive, but Mingus Ah Um comes the closest."
Vinyl: EX (very clean)
Cover: VG+ (really nice, tiny sticker over old catalog number)
Play notes: Excellent sound, mostly quiet with just a touch of light surface noise behind some quiet intros
We prefer to overdeliver and therefore grade conservatively. Our scale runs Near Mint (NM), Excellent (EX), Very Good Plus (VG+), Very Good (VG), Good Plus (G+), Good (G).
